Texas has become a leader not only within the boundaries of America, but also on the global stage. The $2.7 trillion dollar economy ranks eighth in the world, according to the Texas Economic Development Corporation (TxEDC).
In America, the state has remained one of the most prosperous and is continually growing.
The Lone Star State won the 2025 Prosperity Cup for being the best state for new business investments—and it’s not the first time. For three consecutive years, the state has been named by Site Selection Magazine as the top contender for drawing in American business.
For 21 years, the State has been selected by CEOs as the number one state for business in the Chief Executive Magazine’s “Best and Worst States for Business” poll.
Approximately 31 million people call the 267,000-square-mile state home, making it the second most populous in the nation, according to World Population Review.
The State of Texas is led by Republican Governor Greg Abbott, who was elected to his first term in November 2014. Prior to his election, Governor Abbott was the 50th and longest-serving Attorney General of Texas.
Texas consists of 142 state agencies, excluding institutions of higher education. Over 2 million people are employed by the Texas government across its 254 counties and more than 1,200 municipal governments, according to the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC).
The State Capitol is located in Austin. The 360,000 square foot building was finished in 1888, and currently has 400 rooms.
The State has a little over 5.5 million public school children in over 9,000 public schools across more than 1,200 school districts employing over 370,000 educators.
Texas’ system of public higher education encompasses 37 general academic institutions, three lower-division institutions, 59 community and junior college districts, one technical college system, and 14 health-related institutions, which include two new medical schools that opened in 2019. Over 1.5 million students are enrolled in public higher education in Texas.
Texas spends, on average, over $160 billion per year, and a $338 billion budget was approved for the 2026–2027 biennial cycle during the 89th Texas Legislature, with an approximate $27.1 billion Rainy Day Fund at the end of the fiscal year of 2025. In the $338 billion budget, only $149 billion is general revenue money. The rest of the funding comes from the federal government or was placed in the highway fund and bond proceeds, the uses of which are tightly specified.
In the state fiscal year 2024, Texas ranked 50th in the nation for per capita spending.
In 2025, the Texas economy added 195,600 new non-farm jobs. There are nearly 16 million Texans in the labor force. The state is “out-pacing” all states by 0.5%, according to the Office of Governor Greg Abbott.
